seminar on `circular economy now` held in Aalto University



Espoo:: A seminar on `Circular economy now` held at Aalto University last Wednesday in city Espoo.   This seminar focused on circular economy in the global and national context, business in industries, research in academia, as well as barriers and future needs.

The W2-seminar is an integral part of the interdisciplinary sustainability activities of Aalto University. The event is directed mainly to industries, academics, policy makers and external stakeholders.

Vice president  Aalto University Prof. Hannu Seristö address participant and  welcome all and explain why this kind of seminar is so important.

Jyri Arponen, Senior Lead, The Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra spoke about Circular economy in global and national context.

Former prime minister and Vice president of Europen Union Jyrki Katainen spoke on issues Policy drivers through video message.

Moula where speakers were: Ilkka Heikkilä, Lead Engineer, Valmet ,Heikki Ilvespää, Vice President, UPM,Jani Kiuru, Chief Research Officer, Terrafame Group Ltd,Anna-Liisa Koskinen, Senior Consultant, Pöyry,Tatu Karlström,  Product Manager, Kuusakoski Oy,Auli Westerholm, Manager, Fortum Waste Solutions Oy

Prof. Ali Harlin from VTT Group speak on Novel concepts of recycling lignocellulosic biomass.

In the afternoon session the theme was `How research can support implementation of circular economy` chaired by Prof. Jaana Sorvari, where  speakers were:

Prof. Olga Sergienko, ITMO University, St. Petersburg, Russia speak on Basic circular economy indicators and their application in the territorial waste management planning. Prof. Ivo Palu, Tallinn University of Technology, Estonia speak on Waste-to-energy solutions. Prof. Rintu Banerjee, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India spoke about A novel attempt to produce liquid and gaseous biofuel utilizing lignocellulosic feedstocks by adopting green technology: An approach towards sustainable circular economy. Prof. Mika Horttanainen, Lappeenranta University of Technology, explain how Finland Research supporting the development of waste management and recovery  towards sustainable circular economy.

Panel discussion held about Barriers and needs which chaired by Prof. Jaana Sorvari where Company representatives were present as a Panelists, and seminar folded after  group photo session.

It is important to mention here that W² is an interdisciplinary innovation research community headed by Prof. Pekka Oinas including  Prof. Jaana Sorvari, Dr. Munjur E. Moula Dr. Golam Sarwar and Research Scientist Karhan Özdenkci  based in Aalto University.
